Peer Career Specialist

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Career Center facilitates the career readiness of all students throughout the K-State community. Career Specialists are K-State students trained to work in a peer mentoring/counseling role to assist others in the career planning process. Career Specialists guide high school students, college students, and community members through career assessments and assist them in connecting career goals with academic programs at K-State.

 

This team directly serves more than 1,300 K-State students annually and delivers a crucial service to the University community which supports both student retention and recruitment. It is for this reason Career Specialists must have strong helping and communication skills.

 

Career Specialists also facilitate Academic/Career Decisions, EDCEP 120, a 1-credit hour career planning class. In addition, Career Specialists are responsible for coordinating and administering Career Center programs and activities including outreach presentations and assisting with the annual Majors, Minors and More Fair as well as other career events.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

*Undergraduate student with a minimum of 30 credit hours completed by May 2018

*Satisfactory academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

*Willingness to participate in a training program in April 2018

*Evidence of teamwork and communication skills

*Ability to work both independently and as a team member; must display initiative

*Willingness to facilitate career-planning classes

*Time commitment of at least 8 hours per week (average is usually 10 hours per week)

*Desire to make this a productive personal, career development, and employment experience

 

TRAINING OVERVIEW & ADDITIONAL DETAILS

A.         Spring 2018

A 6-session training program includes:

*Communication/Helping Skills Development                               *Decision-Making Theory

*Career Development Theory/Career Assessments                       *Online Career Resources

*Public Speaking/Leadership Development                                   *Office Operations

*KSU Student Service and Academic Programs Review

 

B.         Fall 2018 and beyond

On the job training:

*Mentor/mentee "shadow" program

*Continued study of academic programs

*Weekly staff meetings

 

APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCEDURE

*To receive an application, interested students must attend a mandatory orientation meeting at one of the following times in the in the Berney Family Welcome Center theater.

4 p.m. on January, 29th 

12 p.m. on January, 30th

 4 p.m. on January, 31st

*Career Center staff application and resume due: Friday, February 2nd at 5:00 p.m.

*Final selection will be determined after a two round interview process.

*First round interviews for those selected will take place on Saturday morning, February 24th.
