Food Science Intern, Plant-Based Proteins (Summer 2022) - Bridgewater, NJ

Ingredion is hiring an Intern, Plant-based Proteins (PBP), for summer 2022! As the PBP Intern, you will support progression of business-critical innovation projects. You will have the opportunity to lead front-end ingredient development, work with cross-functional technical teams to deepen the understanding, e.g., evaluate functional characteristics, and application and sensory performance. This intern experience will provide you with the chance to understand the overall process of new ingredient development, create experiment designs, learn and apply formulation skills, characterize products, interpret results, and communicating technical insights in a professional team environment.


As the Intern, Plant-based Proteins, your responsibilities will include:


  • Operating laboratory equipment safely and with little direct supervision to support project needs
  • Maintaining a clean, safe work environment; following guidelines for good housekeeping and safety
  • Conducting searches on prior art (literature, patents), and current technology including competitive activity on related projects, and summarizing the outcomes in appropriate report
  • Presenting project status, updates, and outcomes to project team and key partners
  • Performing laboratory experiments, conduct data analysis and interpret results to make recommendations to project team and support the project
  • Coordinating, summarizing and recording data generated from these experiments; effectively communicating results to project teams and partners
  • Presenting research findings to management with recommendations for future New Product Development or Applied Research projects at completion of internship period


The Intern, Plant-based protein position is well suited for you if you:

Qualified candidates will need to have:


  • Progress towards a Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Material Science, Nutrition, Biochemistry or related field with laboratory research experience with 3.0 / 4.0 GPAA preferred
  • General understanding of chemistry, nutrition, food ingredient or food applications is preferred. Experience related with protein chemistry and characterization is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written technical communication skills, e.g. making presentations and writing technical data/reports
  • Working knowledge of basic computer software applications such as MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work 40 hrs. per week during the summer internship term
  • Reliable transportation required to get to and from facility each work day


To be eligible for consideration, candidates must:


  • Currently possess unrestricted authorization to work in the United States. Ingredion does not intend to sponsor work visas with respect to this position or to provide this position as OPT or CPT.
  • Be a currently enrolled student in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program. If currently enrolled in an undergrad status, must have completed at least two years of coursework with status as a sophomore, junior or non-graduating senior.
